This Japanese style of Karate as practiced today appears to have descended from the Chinese art of Ch’uan-fa, Kempo or “fist way” owes its development to some of the Ju Jutsu schools that flourished in the days of the Japanese Samurai.

According to Kokumin Hyakka Jiten the Japanese encyclopedia  published in Nineteen Sixty Six , Kempo is rooted in the old Ju Jutsu Ryu’s “ system ” . In the year Sixteen Fifty Nine a Chinese man named Cheng Tsu U arrived in the province of Edo. While in Edo at the Kokuseyi Temple Cheng Tsu U, impressed the Samurai with demonstrations of his art. During the latter part of the Sixteenth century, the Kempo aspect of Ju Jutsu had become formalized into a distinct system of self defense. Between the Seventeenth and Nineteenth centuries, additional Ryus came into existence, and began teaching self defense .During this period all self defense forms ,where referred to as, Ju Jutsu.
